The HVAC cheat sheet you need.

Your home’s HVAC system is probably the most important piece of equipment in your home. But do you know how it works? Or even what it stands for? Use this cheat sheet to make sure that you understand the basics about how your home’s heating, cooling and ventilation system works.

What is HVAC?

Ceiling HVAC vent

  • It’s an acronym for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  • HVAC covers the different systems used for heating, cooling and moving air between indoor and outdoor areas throughout your home.
  • System components can be separate, like using window AC units, or combined like having central or ductless AC along with your heating system.
  • HVAC systems also filter and clean indoor air for healthier air quality and control humidity levels.

How HVAC systems work:

  • Fresh air intake comes from outside or inside to ventilate the home. This replenishes oxygen, removes odors, carbon dioxide, and excessive moisture.
  • Natural ventilation occurs when air moves in and out through windows, doors, vents, and other openings.
  • Mechanical ventilation uses equipment or a system to move air in and out of the home.
  • Once air is inside it is drawn into an air handling unit then through filters to remove dirt, dust, allergens, and other particles.
  • Then air is either sent to be heated, cooled or lower the humidity and directed into the home.
  • Central heating and cooling systems do this by circulating it through a network of ducts and registers to different rooms.
  • Other heating or cooling systems do this by pumping it directly into the room or living space.
